Forestry

Forestry was an industry which initially was most unwelcome in the upper Tywi (Towy) valley.  In 1949 there was a move by the government to compulsorily purchase the whole area and to cover it in coniferous trees.  There was a huge movement against this plan and resulted in a public enquiry which ruled in favour of the farmers.  However many later did sell off some of their land for forestation and in many ways this was a blessing as it provided employment for many inhabitants and kept them in the valley.  The story of the battle against total forestation will be told here.
